Is being in the right place at the right time enough?

As I sit here and prepare for the study I’m teaching at our EL Family Reunion this weekend, I can’t help but ruminate on these two quotes from James Allen’s As A Man Thinketh.

“All that man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts.”

“Act is the blossom of thought. And joy and suffering are its fruits.”

I was just thinking about how sad it is that so many people simply aren’t aware of this truth that our thoughts produce our results.

Our results aren’t based on our circumstances or the opportunities we’re given. They’re based on our thoughts and our ability to act upon those thoughts.

A lot of people say that as long as they’re in the right place at the right time, that’s all they need to win.

Well, I’ve found that being at the right place at the right time isn’t always enough.

I remember being in the right place at the right time earlier on in my business endeavors.

But I remember looking around at all the other people around me who were winning, scratching my head, wondering what they were doing that I wasn’t doing. They were winning, but I wasn’t. And we were in each other’s vicinity.

It didn’t make sense to me. What was I doing wrong?

You see, I was at the right place at the right time, but I wasn’t operating at the level of awareness to see the opportunities that were right in front of me.

You can be in the right place at the right time, but if you can’t see the opportunity in front of you, how can you act on it then?

And remember, if we don’t act, we don’t achieve. And if we don’t achieve, we don’t get the results we desire.

On the other hand, you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time, and still find opportunities in front of you.

Right now a lot of people are facing many challenges because of our current economic climate.

But I just want to encourage you with this: now isn’t the time to give up. It’s the time to grow in your awareness so you can spot the opportunities that are there…

Because believe me, there are opportunities.

My friend, each circumstance offers an opportunity. But what matters is our awareness of the opportunity.

Get clear on what you want by doing this

Get clear on what you want by doing this
It’s one of the most necessary steps when venturing off on the journey of personal growth and bringing our dream alive…

And it’s also one of the hardest things for many people to do…

And that is: becoming clear on exactly what it is you want.

If you’ve ever struggled in this area, I encourage you to keep reading…

I was talking to someone earlier this week who was having trouble deciding what exactly it is they want. They were feeling stuck where they were, but they didn’t know what changes they needed to make in their life to get to that place of self-actualization.

But how could they? It’s hard to know what changes need to be made when you don’t have a clear picture of what you’re aiming for… am I wrong?

And if you want to grow as a person, but you don’t understand what areas of your life could use work, how are you supposed to take steps to become a better version of yourself?

My friend, having an aim and being clear on what you want are two very important things.

It’s what propels us to get out of bed in the morning; it’s what moves us to take risks and to find fulfillment in what we do.

And so today I’d like to share a simple but powerful exercise that I recommend to anyone who finds themselves struggling in this area.

If you’re having a hard time pinpointing what it is you want, ask yourself what you don’t want.

And write it down!

After writing a few things down, determine if you see any patterns emerge.

For example, if some of the things you have written down are:

“I don’t want to feel alone,”

“I don’t want to be misunderstood.”

“I don’t want to be poor,”

“I don’t want to feel rejected.”

You might notice this pattern of self-pity, insecurity, and scarcity mindset.

Perhaps you want to work on your self-confidence and your identity, and develop a mindset that says you are, indeed, fully resourced.

That’s the only way you can move forward and aim toward what it is you want.

Does that make sense?

And then to take this a step further and discover what it is you want, just look at the reverse of what you don’t want.

The opposite of loneliness, being misunderstood, poor, and rejected, is having thriving, fruitful relationships with people you love. And it’s living with an abundance of resources.

So through this exercise, you can determine what it is you want by simply listing down what it is you don’t want.

I encourage you to try this out. And let me know how it works for you!

What are you feeding your mind?

What are you feeding your mind?

It doesn’t take long after meeting me to discover my love for James Allen and his writings on thought and mindset.

Whether you’ve known me for a month or for 10 years, you’ll know that I quote James Allen and his book As A Man Thinketh quite frequently. This book, after all, has been such a huge component of my growth.

And today, I want to share a short excerpt from As A Man Thinketh that I was reading over the weekend.

“A man's mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind.”

I encourage you to read this a couple of times to clearly process what it’s saying…

Here’s my summarized version: we have the ability to 1) let our minds run wild with whatever thoughts pop into our heads, (which, by default, are weeds). Or 2) we can take the helm of thought and fill our minds with the right type of thoughts and plant seeds that blossom and allow us to move forward and get us to where we want to be.

Think about that. You, as a human being, have the power to control your thoughts.

If you’re focusing on the negative; if you’re focusing on everything that’s going wrong; if you’re focusing on the feelings you’re experiencing as a result, you’re in an endless cycle of planting weed seeds, like James Allen talks about.

But when you cultivate your mind with the right thoughts; when you plant that beautiful garden and cut out the weeds before they infest your garden, you can live in harmony.

But here’s the thing… if we don’t choose to purposefully feed our mind with the right things; if we don’t plant those seeds and cultivate the garden that is our mind, weeds will grow. They won’t just grow if we focus on the negative. They’ll grow if we decide to do nothing.

“An abundance of weeds will take over and continue to produce.”

Isn’t that a powerful concept to grasp?

So either we take the helm of thought and produce a garden, or we focus on the wrong things and the weeds grow. Or we do nothing and the weeds grow.

Our best option is to take the helm of thought and to cultivate the garden that is our mind.

Here’s what I took away from it. What am I feeding my mind? Because ultimately, whatever I’m feeding my mind will influence and create my thoughts. Seeds will be planted.

And my thoughts, in turn, will influence my mindset, my perspective, my attitude, and my actions.

Where do you want to be? Are you feeding your mind with the right things and tending to the garden that is your mind?

Just some food for thought.
